Sleep Outs are events that help Covenant House raise awareness about the problem of youth homelessness while raising critical funds needed to continue caring for the more than 3,000 homeless kids that come to Covenant House New Jersey (CHNJ) each year in crisis.
By sleeping out with us, you are standing with us and our kids ensuring that we can continue to care for New Jersey’s homeless youth. Your fundraising efforts have a direct effect on the services that we provide.
Our work at CHNJ is funded primarily through private donations, enabling us to provide the best care possible. The more money we raise the more kids we can care for and the better the services we can provide to them.
By registering to Sleep Out you are agreeing to sacrifice your own comfortable bed for one night and choosing to sleep outside at one of our events so that homeless youth won’t have to.
Once you register to Sleep Out at one of our events, our Sleep Out coordinators will be available to you every step of the way to help you meet your fundraising goals and ensure you have the best experience possible. We will provide you with a personal website that you can customize and send out to your family, friends, and community asking them to support your efforts with a financial gift. Since Covenant House, New Jersey is a 501 (c) 3, gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. As we get closer to the event you will receive very specific instructions about the location and time to arrive on site.
The night of the Sleep Out you come to the event site. There you will meet some of our kids and our staff who will share from their experiences. The activities of the evening vary slightly depending on the event but they are always inspiring. At some point, the activities move outside. At the close of the evening, everyone lays a piece of cardboard on the ground and slides into their sleeping bag. We have security on site throughout the night to ensure your safety.
You will get up about around 5:30 am. After packing up your sleeping bag we go back inside for a continental breakfast. There will be a short time of sharing and reflection for those who would like to share. By 7:00 am you will be on the road, off to continue your day’s activities. The immediate effects of a tough night sleep are short lived. However, the insight into the experience of our homeless youth will truly last a lifetime.
“I sleep out because it's my choice.
The thousands of homeless youth who sleep out don't have a choice - it's their reality.”
- Steve Frankel - 7th Sleep Out
