We need you now more than ever!

COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in us having to alter all of our fundraising plans for this fall. These events provide a substantial amount of the money we use to provide safe housing, food, clothing, and other critical resources for our young people.

Since late May, our nation’s challenges have brought to the forefront that racial discrimination is a prevalent part of many stories within our CHNJ sites. We cannot stand by and allow that to continue if it is within our power to effect change. And we believe it is. Now more than ever, we need YOU to be a part of that change. That’s what being in solidarity with our young people means. Sleep Out: Action for Change Family Edition will provide an opportunity to directly impact the barriers our youth face by raising funds, awareness, and equipping YOU to become an advocate for change. We need YOU to be a part of it and positively affect the lives of our kids. 

Below you will find the links for you to join us live for an engaging program via your computer or smartphone. This Sleep Out will help us keep our doors open and our programs running. At this time we need your help more than ever. Please reach out to your family and friends to ask for support for your Sleep Out. The kids are counting on you.

Why is fundraising more important now than ever?

To ensure that we can meet the needs of our young people, we raise 87% of our budget from supporters just like yourself. We have learned that government funds come with strings that often dictate the ways and the duration of care we can provide to our young people. Additionally, this funding cannot always be relied on to be available. To ensure we are able to consistently meet the needs of the incredible young people we serve, we have determined it is necessary to raise the funds we need. 

COVID-19 pandemic has also increased our costs for cleaning our facilities, food, youth activities, and other protection equipment needed to keep our staff and youth safe. 

How can I participate?

1. Register to Sleep Out

Participants in the Sleep Out: Action for Change Family Edition must:

By registering to Sleep Out you are agreeing to sacrifice your own comfortable bed for one night and choosing to sleep outside so that homeless youth won’t have to.

2. Encourage others to join you in sleeping out.  

If you want, you can even create a team page and invite friends, family, and co-workers to join (just remember that all participants must be registered).

3. Fundraise

The Sleep Out is a unique experience that we hope encourages awareness, empathy, and understanding for the immeasurable odds that homeless young people overcome. But while awareness of a problem is important, it isn’t a solution.

We ask Sleep Out participants to raise critical funds that allow Covenant House New Jersey to offer safety, shelter, and support to homeless young people 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  By fundraising, Sleep Out participants become part of the solution for homeless teenagers.

Right now we need your help more than ever. There has never been a greater need or a better time to support the Covenant House community.

4. Share on Social Media

Please share that you are sleeping out with Covenant House New Jersey on our Facebook event page and your own Social Media pages including Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter. 

Take photos and post on social. Be sure to tag @CovenantHouseNJ and use #CHSleepOut.

We need to grow our circle around our young people larger as there are more and more young people who need our help.

Keep fundraising! When you’re posting on social media, include your fundraising link. Send out another email to family and friends. Share the stories of the young people you met in the videos you watched.

5. Prepare to Sleep Out

On Friday, October 23rd, we will host our Sleep Out: Action for Change Family Edition from our homes. To do this we ask you to join us via Zoom. (You do not need a Zoom account to participate.) You should test out your connection to our Zoom Meeting no later than Thursday, October 22nd

Sleep Out

6. Join our Virtual Sleep Out: Action for Change Family Edition – Friday, October 23rd

Please join us for our Virtual Sleep Out: Action for Change Family Edition on Friday, October 23rd at 8 pm.

We have planned an inspiring virtual program for you all. It will be an opportunity to hear from our kids and staff and be in solidarity with the thousands of kids that call CHNJ home. 

All of the evening’s activities will be conducted through our Zoom meeting. (You do not need a Zoom account to participate.) We ask that you join us with video so we can all see each other.

7. Sleep Out – Friday, October 23rd

At about 9:30 pm Friday, October 23rd all sleepers will head outside to SLEEP OUT. Because this is a virtual Sleep Out you will sleep out at your home, in your backyard, your porch, or your car. Please take photos and post them on social media. Be sure to tag @covenanthousenj and use #CHSleepOut.  Don’t forget to go live on Facebook or Instagram to show your donors what you are doing!

8. Join our Morning Reflection – Saturday, October 24th

On Saturday, October 24th at 8:00 am we will gather together for a time of reflection on our experience. We will gather virtually in the same Zoom Meeting room we used last night.

9. After the Sleep Out

As you resume your life on Saturday, October 24th, you are likely to struggle a bit with fatigue. Imagine how it would be to go day after day sleeping on the street. That is what our young people face. This makes it difficult for them to maintain employment and complete schoolwork.

You are encouraged to continue fundraising and donations will be recorded on your site up to December 9th, 2020. This is a great opportunity to reflect on your experience with your family, friends, and co-workers. 

After some rest please find time to thank your donors. Share a story and photo of your Sleep Out, and let them know how much you appreciate their support.  Our team will be in touch with opportunities to attend an upcoming Sleep Out in person.
