Vanessa grew up in Newark and found her way to Nancy’s Place in April of 2018. Feeling overwhelmed and nervous, she stayed in her room often. The staff worked with her, encouraging her with messages of hope but more than that, the belief of the gifts she had to share with the world.
In time, with the help of some of the programs Nancy’s Place had to offer like art, and volunteering within Montclair at events like the film festival Vanessa came out of her shell. She continues to be filled with gratitude for the community that has embraced her.
In August of 2019, she moved into her own apartment. When asked what she learned in her time at Nancy’s Place she said resilience. She knows she can always come back for help, love, guidance and support.
