At Covenant House New Jersey, simple acts of kindnessโlike a birthday cake or a warm blanketโcan make a lasting impact. These moments of care help our youth feel seen, celebrated, and supported. And sometimes, they spark something even bigger: a legacy of love that spans generations.
Making Birthdays Matter
For many young people at Covenant House, birthdays havenโt always been special. Some never had a party, a cake, or even an acknowledgment of their day. Growing up in difficult circumstances, their birthdays were often overlookedโor forgotten altogether.
Thatโs why weโve made it a priority to celebrate our youth each month at Atlantic City. In Atlantic City, a local church group partners with a bakery to donate a birthday cake, ensuring every young person is honored. Staff gather the monthโs birthday celebrants and share cake, laughter, and love.
Nearby, in our Rights of Passage program, one extraordinary volunteer, Audrey, goes even further. Each month, she bakes a themed, hand-decorated cake and delivers it herself. Her cakes are beautiful, joyful, and most importantlyโpersonal. Audreyโs creations are โlove made edible,โ and they remind each youth: You are worth the effort. You are seen.
A Blanket Becomes a Mission
Years ago, a little boy named Logan Walsh was tucked into bed and told to pray for those without blankets or a warm place to sleep. That simple moment stirred his heartโand changed his life.
Logan decided to collect blankets for youth at Covenant Houseโs Atlantic City site. He was honored by his hometown of Mullica Township and connected with our Development Manager, Jen Williams. But this wasnโt just a one-time gift.
As Logan grew older, his commitment remained strong. When he left for college, his younger brother Patrick continued the mission, organizing supply drives at their school, Pilgrim Academy. Their parents, Tom and Gina, became loyal donors and frequent visitors to our site, joining our annual Memorial Day BBQ and staying involved for over two decades.
What started as a childโs gesture of compassion became a family traditionโa legacy of giving and connection that continues to bless our Covenant House community.
Celebrating Youth. Creating Legacy. Spreading Love.
From themed cakes to donated blankets, these acts of kindness may seem smallโbut their impact is huge. They tell our youth: You are not alone. You matter. You are loved.
At Covenant House New Jersey, we are grateful for every volunteer, donor, and family who joins us in creating moments of dignity, joy, and hope. Whether it’s through a birthday celebration or a warm blanket on a cold night, your love leaves a lasting mark.
